Абстракт

Over 22 million children are overweight or obese in the world. The approximate estimation is saying that 75 percent of these overweight and obese children live in the low and middle income countries and this number has a tendency to increase. Overweight and obesity are duly considered as risk factors for non communicable diseases and they can lead to many health complications. Most of the overweight and obese adults have a tendency to gain weight in their childhood. Particularly, 86% of children, gaining weight in adolescence, will have overweight problems when they become adults.

Research on overweight and obesity among children is lacking in Mongolia. A school based cross-sectional survey was conducted and 1504 schoolchildren from 20 secondary schools of Ulaanbaatar were involved in this survey by their age groups (primary, middle and high school), sex ratio is considered the same in each group. Study result showed that 7.2% of the total surveyed children were overweight and obese. Overweight and obesity was statistically significant (p=0.001) among middle school children comparing to the other age groups. Socio-economic status, health education, physical activity and participation in sports and recreational activities of the schoolchildren influenced being overweight and obese.
